1. EMPLOYED
- W-2 Forms

2. UNEMPLOYED
- Unemployment, state tax refund (Form 1099-G)

3. SELF - EMPLOYED
- Non-Employee Compensation (Form 1099-NEC)
- Miscellaneous Income (Form 1099-MISC )
- Record of all expenses --Check Registers, credit card statements, and receipts
- Business-use asset information (Costs, date placed in service, etc.)

4. RENTAL INCOME
- Records of Income and Expenses

5. RETIREMENT INCOME
- Social Security/ Railroad Retirement (Form SSA-1099/ RRB-1099)
- Pension / IRA / Annuity Income / 401(k) (Form 1099- R)
- Traditional IRA SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS or DIVIDENDS
- Interests, Dividend Income (Form 1099-INT / 1099-DIV / 1099-OID)
- Income from sales of Stock or other property (Form 1099-B / 1099-S)
- Health Savings Account & Long-Term care reimbursements (Form 1099-SA / 1099-LTC)
- Transactions involving Cryptocurrency (Virtual Currency)

6. OTHER INCOME & LOSSES
- 1099-K Payment Card and Third-Party Network Transactions
- Gambling Income (Form W-2G or Records showing Income as well as expense record)

- Record of alimony paid/ Received with ex-spouse’s name & SSN

TYPES OF DEDUCTIONS
The type of deductions may depend on your life situation. Therefore, you might not need all of the records listed below.

1. ESTIMATED PAYMENTS SENT TO IRS OR FTB
- Record of estimated payments made (Form 1040-ES (IRS), or Form 540-ES (FTB))

2. HOME-OWNERSHIP
- Mortgage Interest (Form 1098)
- Real estate and personal property tax records
- Receipts for energy-saving home improvements (solar panels, solar water heater, etc.)
- All other 1098 forms

3. CHARITABLE DONATIONS
-Cash amounts donated to houses of worship, schools, other charitable organizations
- Records of non-cash charitable donations
- Amounts of miles driven for charitable or medical purposes

4. MEDICAL EXPENSES
- Amounts paid for healthcare insurance & to doctors, dentists, hospitals

5. HEALTH INSURANCE
- Form 1095-A, 1095-B or 1095-C 

6. CHILDCARE EXPENSES
- Fees paid to a licensed daycare center or family daycare for an infant or preschooler
- Wages paid to a babysitter
- Name & Social Security of care-taker

7. EDUCATIONAL EXPENSES
- (Form 1098-T) from educational institutions
- Receipts to itemize qualified educational expenses
- Records of any scholarships or fellowships you received
- (F 1098-E) if you paid student loan interest

8. K-12 EDUCATOR
- Receipts for classroom expenses

9. STATE & LOCAL EXPENSES
- Amount of state/local income tax paid
- An invoice showing the amount of vehicle sales tax paid

10. RETIREMENT & OTHER SAVINGS
- (Form 5498-SA) showing HAS contributions
- (Form 5498) showing IRA contributions
- All other 5498 series Forms (5498-QA / 5498-ESA)

11. FEDERALLY DECLARED DISASTER
- City/county you lived/worked/had property in
- Records to support property losses (appraisal, clean-up costs, etc.)
- Records of rebuilding/ repair costs
- Insurance reimbursements/ claims to be paid
- FEMA assistance information
- Check FEMA to see if your county has been declared a federal disaster
